Suez Canal, opened in 1869, has undergone an expansion where 35m parallel channel along with the 37 km widening and deepening have been added to the existing waterways.  The renovated channel commenced its operation on Thursday, 6th August.

The new channel will ease out the waiting period from 18 to 11 hours.  This channel has a capacity of a maximum of 49 ships that can pass through each day, which is expected to multiply in the coming decades.

The project was complete on the fast track basis within one year, which is less than one-third of the estimated time.  The project had an estimated outlay of almost 8 billion euros.
